TOP SEOD TRUTS
V. The WORCESTER (CL) and four destroyers of Destroyer
Division 21 have been transferred from the Atlantic Fleet to augment
COMNAVFE and arrive in Buckner Bay, Okinawa 18 August (CINCPAC-
FLT) (CONFIDENTIAL)
W. The TOLEDO (CA), MANSFIELD (DD) and COLLETT (DD) on
east coast patrol at the request of Army shore spotters fired harassing
fire at enemy troop and gun emplacements in the Yongdok area. Star shells
were fired during the night to illuminate for shore artillery fire. Rail and
road junctions were interdicted. (COMNAVFE) (CONFIDENTIAL)
U.S. AIR FORCE
X. USAF claims for 30 July, based on incomplete reports, include:
7 trucks, 2 box cars, 3 field guns, and two bridges destroyed; 1 tank, 9
trucks, 21 box cars, and 11 field guns damaged, and 200 troops killed.

Y. On 31 July two B-29 groups will attack the industrial complex
in the Hamhung area. The third group will attack close ground support
transportation targets. (FEAF) (SECRET)
4. General
General MacArthur states that in order to avoid the confusion re-
sulting from the lack of clearly defined areas of defense responsibility, he
has divided the Strait of Formosa longitudinally into two parts. The west-
ern part, from the Chinese mainland to within ten miles of the coast of
Taiwan, has been assigned to the 7th U.S. Fleet effor patrol and counter-
invasion operations by air and surface forces". The area east of that as-
signed to the 7th Fleet has been assigned to the air and naval elements of
the Chinese Nationalist Government.
General MacArthur has arrived in Taiwan for the purpose of
making a brief reconnaissance of the situation. (TOP SECRET) (CINCFE)
