9:30am Unidentified woman (probably ANNETTE) to MISS DeFALCO. Woman
said she wouldn't even be up yet but that CORCORAN called her
at 8:00 A.M.; that CORCORAN didn't go on the plane or last night's
train, but went on the 9 o'clock train this morning. DeFALCO
said he could have gone on the plane with T. V. SOONG this morn-
ing. DeFALCO said that JIM "got them all off this morning" and
that he got a beautiful wrist watch from T. V. (SOONG)
10.20am DAVID LU (Phon.) to JIM BRANNON (Phon.). LU said he had talked
to NORMAN SOONG (Phon.) who is supposed to go with "us, and
"we" want to catch up with the other party (T. V. SOONG?) to get
the passports fixed up in Chung King. LU said that a Mr. CHUN
(Phon.) is working on the Embassy to get priorities and LU wondered
if they have to make arrangements with A.T.C. to get on a plane.
BRANNON said that that is automatically taken care of and that
"we" will get you on the first plane to leave. BRANNON thinks
there is a plane leaving Monday which will be in plenty of time
as "he" (T. V. SOONG?) is taking 5 days on the trip. LU said
they must take the photographic equipment, which was the whole
purpose of the trip, on the plane in addition to their personal
baggage. BRANNON said that that would be up to the Embassy and
that LU should continue to work on that. BRANNON will contact
LU at ADams 1482.
12:30pm
JIM BRENNAN to DAVID LU. BRENNAN told him the situation re their
military permits. LU said that NORMAN SOONG is regularly "our"
war correspondent and was accredited to STILWELL's headquarters;
that later on he went to Guam when NIMITZ was there, and inasmuch
as he knew the routine LU had him take care of this matter. SOONG
saw col. RUBY at the War Dept. and RUBY was to wire WIEDEMEYER
(Phon.), Theater Commander, and get approval for them to visit
that theater of operations. As yet RUBY has had no reply. LU
said he guessed they just wouldn't be able to make it; that if
they couldn't meet T. V. SOONG in Chungking there is no need of
going, because they wanted to take photographs of T. V. on his
trip and cover his meetings when he sees STALIN and when he goes
to Paris and London. LU will get Col. RUBY's number at the war
Dept. and call BRENNAN.
12:47pm
DAVID LU to JIM BRENNAN who was out. He gave MISS DeFALCO the
extension of Col. RUBY at the War Dept., which is 4743.
1:00pm
DAVID LU advised that when BRENNAN talked to War Dept. he should
give LU's name as DAVID LUTHER LO and not LU, as he filled out
all the War Dept. forms under the name of DAVID LUTHER IO. O.K.
2:50pm
BILL YOUNGMAN to GEORGE SLAFF. Latter said a certain person's
name went up and he should have no trouble. MURRAY and others,
