1. Situation in Brief:
a. GROUND
Attack by elements of the ROK Capitol Division on 28 and 29
August are reported to have driven the enemy north of Kigye in the Pohang
area. In the northern sector, the 19th Regiment, 6th ROK Division, with-
drew under heavy enemy pressure to 4 miles southeast of Uihung, but a
counterattack is reported to have regained lost positions. An enemy attack
against the 8th ROK Division positions was contained after an advance of
about 2,000 yards. Little action was reported in the 1st ROK Division, 1st
U.S. Cavalry Division, and the 2d U.S. Infantry Division sectors. In the
southern sector, a 1 1/2 hour artillery fire preceded a strong night attack
against elements of the 1st Battalion, 24th U.S. RCT. Results of a friendly
counterattack were unreported. An estimated 1,000 enemy troops with
vehicles were observed 6 miles east of Chinju on 28 August. (FECOM)

b. NAVY
PHILIPPINE SEA and VALLEY FORGE aircraft on the east
coast of Korea struck shipping, railroad equipment, bridges, buildings,
vehicles and supply depots. Navy air and gunfire gave effective close sup-
port to troops. ROK Navy shelled enemy island positions and landed patrols.
Navy surface and air forces patrolled Korean and Formosan waters. (FE-

C. AIR
During 28 August, FEAF flew 573 sorties, including 382 combat.
On the night of 27-28 August, 28 intruder sorties attacked enemy communi-
cations and targets of opportunity in 34 areas. On 28 August, 23 B-29's
attacked Seishin marshaling yards with excellent results. One B-29 attacked
Kangnung with good results. Seventeen B-29's attacked priority bridge
targets with poor to excellent results. One B-29 scored excellent results
with a delayed fuse drop on the Seoul pontoon bridge. (FEAF) (SECRET)
