1. Situation in Brief:
Leading elements of the 17th U.S. RCT of the 7th U.S. Infantry
Division secured Kapsan and continued over icy mountain roads to within
7 1/2 miles of Hyesanjin on the Manchurian border. Elements of the ROK
Capitol Division, supported by air strikes and Naval gunfire, seized the
town of Yongchon against stubborn hostile resistance. On the western
portion of the front, the activity remained relatively unchanged as the ROK
II Corps advanced against dwindling resistance, and as U.S. I Corps patrols
reported only minor skirmishes. Elements of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division
southeast of Songchon were ambushed and fought several sharp engagements
with hostile units up to battalion size. Naval gunfire from ST. PAUL and
ENGLISH, and Naval air support furnished by Task Force 77 planes helped
the ROK Capitol Division regain the initiative against the enemy in northeast
Korea. During the 17th, 18th, and 19th of November, Naval air flew 465
sorties, and U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 1,424 sorties, including
659 combat, (FECOM)(SECRET)
2. Weather:
Clear, becoming scattered to broken clouds in operational area by
1300 with visibility 6 miles. Forecast: Multilayer cloud decks throughout
the night, becoming scattered in northwest Korea by 1100. Visibility will
be poor in the cold front passage during the night of 20 November. (FEAF)

3. United Nations Situation:
a. U.S. I Corps: The 12th and 15th Regiments of the 1st ROK
Division continued patrolling. Patrols engaged small enemy groups 6 miles
west, and 2 to 5 miles northwest of Pakchon. The 11th ROK Regiment pre-
pared to relieve the 5th U.S. Infantry RCT in position. In the 24th U.S. In-
fantry Division area, elements of the 27th British Commonwealth Infantry
Brigade patrolled 6 1/2 miles northwest of Pakchon after dispersing a
small enemy group 3 miles to the north-northwest of the town. Elements
of the 5th U.S. Infantry RCT patrolled in an area about 3 miles northeast
