- 3 - BYRNES is fond of him. TOM said NELSON (ROCKEFELLER) and ARCHIE (ARCHIBALD Mac LEISH) want to go but that (JULIUS c.) HOLMES wants to stay and DEAN (ACHESON) "is torn between wanting to be that and Solicitor General and wanted to be Under-Secretary." CUNEO asked who TOM (CLARK) would make solicitor-general and TOM said "the talk is JACK EWING and JACK says it's so." JUDSON, who was his personal assistant when he was in the Criminal Division, they say will head the criminal Division. ERNIE asked who VINSON would put in as Under-Secretary of the Treasury, "Well, ED PRICHARD ought to be in there somewhere. is C--"Well, he'll probably go with--but I doubt whether VINSON would make PRICHARD the Under-Secretary. He might make him general counsel of the Treasury but he certainly wouldn't go the rest of the way." CORCORAN asked if RANDOLPH (Attorney RANDOLPH PAUL ?) wants to get out of private practice and ERNIE said that RANDOLPH would love to go up on the high court. CORCORAN said he understands that VINSON stayed here and did not go abroad, on the theory that they didn't want to have too many risks of succession in case of death. CORCORAN stated that VINSON is an "awfully good man. ERNIE asks CORCORAN as a favor to ask GEORGE VORNAW (Phon.) to ask LIEUTENANT JIM REYNOLDS, who is a brother of QUENTIN REYNOLDS and lives in the same apartment with ERNIE, to that party for TOM CLARK tomorrow. He said that GEORGE is arranging it and that "a MOSS BEHAS (Phon.) is holding it out at his place." CORCORAN said he will try to contact GEORGE about this but reminds ERNIE that this is 1 o'clock in Washington on Saturday afternoon and he might have difficulty reaching him. ERNIE remarked that it is interesting that CLAYTON is staying and that ARCHIE and NELSON are going and that HOLMES wants to stay. CORCORAN stated that JIMMY DUNN wants to stay also and that they will keep him, he thinks. ERNIE said that he hopes not. ERNIE commented that BEN (COHEN) will be in a position to have some real fun. He continued: "Well, Tom, what about that MOSCOW trip, is that going on all -- is the great diplomatic success close (Phon.) to your friend? (T. V. SOONG ?) C--I don't know, I haven't heard and I very carefully made sure we wouldn't hear, because I don't want to; I don't want any cables comingout of MOSCOW. E--Yeh. C--I mean, I would rather he would keep his cards close to his belly. E--Sure, but C--Those boys have a real intelligence service. E--Wonderful. well, it really caused the greatest consternation in TOKYO. C--Well, TOKYO is through, boy. E--Yeh, but Jesus, TOM, they certainly are, in my opinion, send- ing up peace feelers. C--Oh, there is no question about it.
