CO SUMMARY Washington, D. C. July 11, 1945 3:15 PM DAVE CORCORAN in Newark, New Jersey to TOM CORCORAN. DAVE asked, "What would this thing mean - residence in the United States?" TOM said he supposed so, but thought a man could make his own terms. He said, "If it were you, they might think you had drag enough to be able to make it worth while for them to take it on any terms you wanted it." DAVE said, "Except that it's a government thing and it would be limited that way." DAVE stated he did not know "whether they're fixed the way our government is fixed that they can only pay certain maximums. But at any rate it would not be like working for a private individual where it would be what he thought you were worth to him. They agreed it would not be tax-free and that DAVE could not take the job without losing money. TOM said that JOHN McCLINTOCK (State Department) told him he thought DAVE would be interested in putting someone in "who would play with us". TOM suggested DAVE talk with JOHN. DAVE and TOM then discuss JACK FOWLER (JOHN L. FOWLER, Washington Attorney?) and his capabilities, TOM venturing the opinion he might not have sufficient imagination to handle it, to get around Washington and find out things. However, TOM said he thought it a good job for JACK. DAVE said that a good friend of BILL JESION (phonetic) might be all right. DAVE will see him tomorrow. His name is ANDY ELLISON and he works in the Price Division of RFC. DAVE asked TOM to check up on him and TOM promised to do so. DAVE said ANDY is a lawyer, is "anxious to tie up with us because of BILL's connections". TOM will check and let him know. DAVE will try to find an accordion for MME SOONG's sister on behalf of TOM. 3:40 PM MR. CHARLES DETMAR in New York City to TOM CORCORAN, to say: "TOM, you never made the grade." (Bar examination?) TOM answered, "God, I knew I flunked that one". DETMAR then said, "You don't belong to the club, to either club". TOM asked, "As I understand it, what do I have to do to join the district court?" DETMAR answered, "File an application." CORCORAN said, "That's all? On the basis of the Supreme Court!™ DETMAR: "Yeah, you have to appear." 3:43 PM SHER (ROBERT E. SHER, Attorney) to TOM CORCORAN. SHER said, "I told them it had not come through yet but I'd talk to you about it." TOM answered that he was playing for stakes "bigger than that license and I haven't heard from my stakes yet. So just stall off any calls through today." SHER said he would and declared that he could get the $3000 any time. CORCORAN said it could be got well enough tomorrow if desired, so "stall it off.' SHER explained that ARNOLD KIEHN (Repatriate from China) had called about 2:00 P.M. today and had said he'd call TOM CORCORAN in an hour. KIEHN had stated that he was in New York and wanted to take care of the matter of the license while he was there, hence he was inquiring of SHER whether the license for the $3000 had come through yet.
