3:35 PM MR. PANUCH to CORCORAN: P - TOM! You talked about PRITCH the other day. Are you absolutely sure he's on our team? C - Nope. P - Uh, huh. C - Where you talking from? P - The office - so - the reason I check up, being a cautious guy - so forth and so on, and I'm just wondering, in view of our lack of success with VINSON to whether someone is throwing a block - whether it was PRITCH or KELLEY. It could have been either. They're absolutely vicious on CROWLEY and have ruined CROWLEY with VINSON. C - You mean (PAUL) KELLEY (Office of Economic Stabilization) too? P - Yeah! Both of them. That came out yesterday; they had a very important letter for clearance with shipment C - Just one minute will you just one minute what happened? P - They had a deal on for the release of some Argentine "Maze" oil, fats and oils, etc.; there's some shortage on the things in return for some fuel oil. CROWLEY and ICKES don't want to send or sell any fuel, etc., and it was up to CROWLEY to document the damn thing and VINSON told our guy, who was over there writing and processing the letters, that he hoped to Christ's sake, they better talk jobs to COX about this, and he said you can't get anything out of CROWLEY but double talk; and then, when he talked about this report from the BUREAU of the BUDGET to the PRESIDENT on cleaning up FEA, why VINSON seemed quite enthusiastic for it, and quite unsympathetic to CROWLEY and SO a very good hatchet job on CROWLEY has been done by VINSON. C - These two things happened yesterday? P - Yep. I know how PRITCH feels about CROWLEY. C - Oh, I know that. P - And as for the other thing. When I saw VINSON at the meeting about a week ago, I definitely got the impression he was ill at ease as far as I was concerned. I feel he may have a guilty conscience on it. so I know someone is throwing a block. C - Whatever I have done in that direction, you may be sure I have understood the things you are talking about. P - Well, fine I'm not criticizing your judgment, but I'm trying to check my own feeling as to whether you feel as I do, or whether you have a reasonable doubt as TOM POWELL used to say. C - O.K., fine. 3:38 PM CORCORAN to LEO CROWLEY: T - WORTH is playing poker with CLINT tonight. Have you heard anything more? L - Suppose I give him a little bit of a buzz right now, before WORTH sees him. How are you? T - I'm all right, and I understand you're sitting pretty right now too. L - We got our bill through unanimously, you know. T - Yes, I know you did. L - I was up to lunch this noon up in (LESLIE) BIFFLE's office with FRED (VINSON) and JOHN SNYDER and (SENATOR) BARKLEY and WALLACE WHITE (Senator from Maine) and all them. And fellows like WALLACE WHITE didn't do any damage.
