CO SUMMARY
August 7, 1945
6:52 PM
WORTH CLARK told CORCORAN that EDWARD WHEELER had been trying to contact
him today, although CLARK had asked WHEELER previously to contact him on
Wednesday (August 8, 1945). CORCORAN told CLARK to tell WHEELER that they
haven't been able to do anything yet because the top officials won't be
back until tomorrow. CORCORAN also said that he must have a memorandum
for (MATTHEW) CORREA (Navy Department) in the morning, including information
as to where the unidentified subject of their conversation is at the
present time, when he applied (for a discharge), the whole history of how
he tried to get out, what he is now, how old he is, and what his service
has been. CORCORAN said that he must forward this memorandum to CORREA to
get things started.
7:17 PM
WORTH CLARK to TOM CORCORAN, who told him that he had found those figures
in his pocket and CLARK said he will talk it over with CORCORAN in the
morning. They refer to a settlement on the basis of 80% and to 12
million and to 21 million pounds. CLARK said that a newspaper friend of
his called him and said that the President would be in Washington in a
few hours and that a special train had been sent to Norfolk to pick him up.
In this connection CLARK remarked that (LESLIE) BIFFLE was right and that
he wouldn't be a bit surprised if BIFFLE was on the train although he
didn't check up on this as it would look like he was pressing it. CORCORAN
asked if CLARK had any reaction to his last statement and CLARK said that
he hasn't even seen it in print yet. They continued:
W - Oh, well, of course we've got an lawfully good story to present to
those fellows, that here he's being harassed already--
T - Well, I'm going to say to them, I am going to tell them the truth,
I am going to say (W. H. JASSPON ?) is drumming up business.
W - Yeah, well, he is.
T - And his honest truth was let's take this where we're unimpeachable
and then let him come back and we can formulate another theory, but
I've got to be able to shut the others off or I can't give you what
I am giving you.
CLARK then said that "he" has denied the Fort Worth and the Gwillem (phonetic)
Companies. He said that the Packer people, through McCARTY (phonetic) had
sought to retain CLARK and CORCORAN to represent them in a case involving
500,000 pounds of fats or oils. He digressed to say that (ADMIRAL ?) LAND
(W.S.A. ?) had called frantically to McCARTY when he heard that STYLES
BRIDGES was on his trail and was "going to blast him.' He explained that
BRIDGES and McCARTY had roomed together at the Jefferson before BRIDGES was
married. He said that "McCARTY you kinda got to watch but he is all right
fundamentally and he's valuable and WHEELER likes him and a lot of people
do and he and STYLES are just DAMON and PYTHIAS. He said that McCARTY missed
his appointment with LAND today but is going down to see him tomorrow. CLARK
said that he didn't think they should get under any obligation to McCARTY.
CORCORAN said he need not take it up with McCARTY because there wasn't
anything McCARTY could do with LAND for these people that other people have
done already because LAND is fond of ROBESON (phonetic) and the rest of them
also and this is a situation where "you have got to take the thing off
LAND's neck." WORTH said that tentatively he had - couldn't take the
