You got one on there--\nHAROLD STEPHENS.\nC - Well, I'm thinking in other terms anyway. I'm thinking in terms\nof intellectual competence.\nP - Oh, well, sure.\nC - I'm thinking of an appellate kind of mind. I say it takes more\nbrains to be a District Court Judge than it does to be a Court of\nAppeals Judge because you have to do the original filtering of\nthings.\nP - It takes a different kind of brains.\nC - But it takes a different kind of brains, and it needs somebody who's\nbeen in an administrative job and then we also get rid of the\nHOLTZOFF threat.\nP - Who's pushing MATT?\nC - I don't know.\nP - That's a strange thing. I never thought he had much backing after\nBOB JACKSON (Supreme Court) and so forth left. I mean--that's more\nthe old (HUGH) CUMMINGS (former Attorney General) business. I don't\nknow. I just couldn't figure what was--JOHN McCORMICK? (Majority\nHouse Floor Leader ?)\nC - Well, I don't know. I suppose so. I don't want to hurt MATT--he's\na nice guy. But I mean, I'm thinking of something else.\nP\n- I like MATT all right, but MATT has got about as much sense of\nappellate law as\nC - Well, it's a different kind of law and what I want to do is--I mean,\nI want to see things--and I think MATT means HOLTZOFF too.\nI\nmean,\nall around, anyway you take it--Catholics, Jews, appellate juris-\ndiction, original court jurisdiction, anything--and this PROCTOR\nbusiness is bad, boy. Absolutely unnecessary. Republicans don't\nappoint Democrats. Why Democrats have to show they've got a\nfundamental inferiority complex so they have to appoint Republicans\nso the country will think they're respectable, and that's what it\nall is, fellow, I think is nuts!\nP - That's right.\nC - But I'm saying you're going to have a rotten court if you don't move.\nP - That's right.\nC - I tell you a fellow who could help you with ABE too is LYNDON (JOHNSON ?).\nP - LYNDON's still in Texas.\nC - Well, he's on the other end of a telephone.\nP - Yeah, but I don't know who LYNDON--\nC - LYNDON would be for ABE.\nP - Yeah, but I just don't know how much influence held have.\nC - I think he has a great deal.\nP - Well, I'll call him.\nC - O.K., sir.\nP - All right.
