Washington, D. C. CO SUMMARY September 6, 1945 8:48 AM CORCORAN to Senator JOSEPH GUFFEY of Pennsylvania. TC - JOE, this is TOM CORCORAN. JG - Yes, TOM. TC - I just thought that you would be amused to know what happened to that air lines thing 'of yours while you were gone. The fellow who did the nasty business on you was the boy who you talked to. JG - HARLEY BRYANT (phonetic)? TC - Yes. And let me tell you what he did. He forced on the chairman some time ago that this was his route to dispose of. And he had two friends to pay off. And he was hard enough to make the mistake of trying to pay off both of them. He not only paid off Eastern and EDDIE RICKENBACKER whose general counsel and biggest stockholder is a fellow named GAMBRELL (phonetic) and who lives in his home town of Atlanta. Now, that was the payoff on Eastern. He also paid off Delta whose head office is in his home town. And he divided that territory between the two of them. He gave Eastern one of them and Delta the other. I think he made a mistake in being that much of a pig. And I think there will be an application for a rehearing. JG - Have you filed it? TC - It isn't filed yet, JOE. It files in about a week. JG - Don't let it go by. TC 1 No. I just want to tell you. JG - Well, tell BILL about it. I go out of town tomorrow. TC - The approach on this fellow is that he was a pig--that he paid off both of his guys--and out of 'that I think you may be able to break it. That's what happened. He paid off GAMBRELL in Atlanta and he paid off Delta in Atlanta. JG - GAMBRELL and Delta? TC - GAMBRELL is the general counsel of Eastern and he paid off Delta in Atlanta. JG - All right. I'm glad you told me that. The Senator then advised CORCORAN that he was going to Pittsburg and asked CORCORAN to watch this matter for him, that he would see CORCORAN Monday or Tuesday. 9:07 AM CORCORAN to Senator LISTER HILL. HILL said that he had told a constituent in Alabama that he had known about the atomic bomb for some time--that he knew TOMMY CORCORAN. CORCORAN then told HILL that, "I have a story to tell you about the atomic bomb that will make your hair curl." CORCORAN then stated that he had gotten his little brother out of the Army through the assistance of JIMMY BYRNES and that the brother would be with the Council of Foreign Ministers in London with JIMMY BYRNES and BEN COHEN. He then stated that PEGGY (MRS. CORCORAN) had a brother DR. JAMES DOWD who was in the Medical Corps and who had been alerted for foreign duty. CORCORAN wanted him transferred instead to some medical center in the United States "where he could learn something." HILL will help with this and CORCORAN said that he would furnish the details to HILL's secretary.
