CORCORAN to Senator LISTER HILL (Continued):
They continued as follows:
TC - Now, the other thing I wanted to tell you about was about JOSH
(Senator JOSH LEE). Incidentally, I know you will be pleased. We
were up at the SMATHER's (Senator WILLIAM SMATHERS of New Jersey)
in Atlantic City over the weekend. And I managed to get a honey of
a case into BILL SMATHER's hand.
LH - Good. Damn if I were BILL I'd ask you back.
TC - No. I'd done it before that. Just between you, me and the bedpost
it will give BILL twenty thousand bucks.
LH - What?
TC - That's a good fee.
LH - Jesus, that's a good fee. Damn right that's a good fee.
TC - But that's not for you to tell him or anyone else.
LH - I wouldn't breathe it to him.
TC - But I was awfully glad that I got it done. Because I want to try to
take care of the gang a. little. Now, I'm on the problem of taking
care of another one of the gang, and that's JOSH.
LH - What are you going to do with JOSH?
TC - Now, there's been a terrific fight inside the C.A.B. over EDDIE
RICKENBACKER. EDDIE is riding high now through HARLLEE BRANCH (C.A.B.),
and JOSH stepped up a little to EDDIE. But the point is WELSH POGUE
(C.A.B.) is going to leave. He's going with an air line. And there
is the problem of who's going to be chairman. Now, JOSH ought to be
that chairman.
LH - He ought to be that chairman.
TC - He's a Senator, and he is in line for it. But the EDDIE RICKENBACKER
crowd will make a terrific drive to keep JOSH from being chairman.
Now what JOSH hopes somebody could do--and immediately I thought of
you--that you could talk to LES (BIFFLE) and ask LES to make sure of
it that a Senator stepped up; that you knew WELSH POGUE was going;
and that you'd hope that he would keep in mind and in the mind of
his "friend" that after all JOSH is a Senator, he's the ranking
member of the board, and that JOSH ought to step up to that job. Now
that's an appointment from the President, you know?
LH - Yes. I know it is.
TC - The chairmanship is.
LH - That's right.
TC - And I thought in the next couple of days that you would take a
whack at it.
LH - I will take a whack at it.
TC - Because I'd hate to see JOSH stepped over.
LH - Well, I'll get right at it. LES is going to Europe, between you and
me, about Saturday night I think.
TC - Then you'd better move on it fast.
HILL then stated that JOHN SNYDER (O.W.M.R.) and SYMINGTON (Surplus Property)
were going to Europe. CORCORAN told him that the real reason for the trip
was to see EISENHOWER and to dispose of surplus; also that the trip was a
"junket." HILL stated that he would like to take a trip over with CORCORAN.
