Washington, D. C. CO SUMMARY September 12, 1945 11:25 AM WORTH CLARK to CORCORAN. CLARK said he has a lunch date with (GERALD) NYE but he's getting nowhere on this airlines thing. CLARK has not been able to meet with VANDENBERG and LaFOLLETTE as yet. They are afraid a war hero will be elected to the Commission and that would hurt "us" because he would favor the big airlines. 11:41 AM Representative ED HART (New Jersey) to CORCORAN. CORCORAN said that (JUSTICE ?) JACKSON got a sudden call and went. It was embarrassing to CORCORAN to not be able to set up a meeting between HART and JACKSON. CORCORAN said that he was recently in Atlantic City with JAMES McGRANERY and while there spent an evening with former Senator SMATHERS. CORCORAN said he discussed with him the possibility of running DWIGHT PALMER, President of General Cable Company, at Perth Amboy, as Senator from New Jersey. CORCORAN, in great detail, tells HART about PALMER's back- ground, character, potential political strength, lineage, present activity, and General Cable's reputation as a business. CORCORAN said he was not trying to force PALMER on the New Jersey machine, but was only passing along the name of a man he believed to be a better possibility of being a good Senator than HAWKS. HART said he would talk it over with BILL MAHON, who has better political judgment. CORCORAN indicated PALMER could "pay his own way." HART said he could perhaps see JUSTICE JACKSON at a later date. 11:55 AM FRANCIS BIDDLE to Miss DE FALCO advising that he will meet CORCORAN at 1:15 P.M. today in the lobby of the Statler. She will tell CORCORAN. 12:01 PM CORCORAN to CHARLES MURCHISON at REpublic 4085, Extension 277, the office of Mr. MONROE. CORCORAN advised that a New England Colonel is the war hero who "Mr. V" has in mind. MURCHISON said he thinks possibly JIM at A.T.C. has a hand in it. CORCORAN said there's an X in the picture today. CORCORAN said "we can't go to sleep on it." CORCORAN said he thinks "our friend" will get the Supreme Court post. CORCORAN also said he could find out from "V" who this Colonel is but he wants MURCHISON to do it. 12:31 PM CORCORAN to GEORGE KILLIOM at Democratic Committee. CORCORAN said that JIMMY (JAMES WATSON) GERARD may pay 50 grand to get an Ambassador's job to Mexico or Cuba. CORCORAN said he was former Ambassador to Germany in the last war. He's been head of many finance committees and could help financially in a great many other places too. KILLIOM thought perhaps he was too old and might not be heavy enough but CORCORAN said something was really owed him because he worked hard in the last campaign and besides GERARD only wants the job for 3 or 4 months so that he may complete the "last page" of his book. GEORGE said he just recently sent over a list but "I will hold a conversation on it" and perhaps GERARD can be worked in.
