CO SUMMARY
September 13, 1945
2:42 PM
MR. FOLEY's Secretary said FOLEY told her to leave GAEL E. SULLIVAN's
address and telephone number. It is Headquarters 6th District Command,
422 Federal Building, Detroit. Telephone Cherry-9330.
3:30 PM
MRS. BEHAN to CORCORAN. BILL YOUNGMAN then came in. CORCORAN says he
hasn't heard anything for T. V. SOONG yet then CORCORAN continued:
"You know the F.B.I. Building right across from the park, air-conditioning
in the whole thing, I think we can get the whole damn thing if you want it.
YOUNGMAN: "Maybe we do, where is it?" CORCORAN: "Right next door to
you, it's the F.B.I. Building across from the park." CORCORAN then says
he will call SOONG as soon as he knows anything.
4:05 PM
CORCORAN to JOE O'CONNELL at Treasury asking if anything had cleared on
"that thing" (ARNOLD KIEHN Matter ?), and that JOSH LEE called "me about
it this morning." O'CONNELL said he thought it is in the Secretary's
office and as soon as he hears, he'll advise CORCORAN.
5:10 PM
WORTH CLARK to CORCORAN. CORCORAN said that WARNER's (CAA) resignation
was to be effected 8/31/45, but hadn't been accepted as yet. CLARK had
a long talk with (Senator STYLES) BRIDGES, and told him that New York
City was out of the way. JACOBSON can't get down until Monday. CLARK
says that even if (LT. COL.) JACOBSON doesn't get it they can't lose by
trying it with the New England crowd. WORTH says he's going to see
HARRY (TRUMAN ?) about it. CLARK said he tipped BRIDGES off to what
(BARTLEY) CRUM did. CORCORAN interrupted and said he'd call back.
5:55 PM
MR. STARR to BILL YOUNGMAN that the Navy is taking over the building in
Shanghai formerly assigned by the Underwriters Bank, 17 The Bund, the
North China Daily News Building, owned by the British and leased by
STARR's people from them. STARR wants Underwriter's Bank and Asia Life
Insurance Company to keep the first floor of the building and let the
Navy have the other floors. He thinks if FORRESTAL would make an inquiry
in the field asking why the Navy is taking over a place belonging to a
United States bank and a thing that will hurt United States credit that
they would let him have the first floor. STARR says another thing Rear
Admiral MYLES (phonetic) is in charge of Naval Forces in China, he was with
the O.S.S. and he disapproved of MYLES early in the war because he,
through a misconception, thought STARR was making money out of O.S.S.
during the war. STARR tells YOUNGMAN to try WALTER JUDD for congressional
help on it. YOUNGMAN says FORRESTAL will only turn it over to an aide,
and that they know all his aides and all are "just average", they may do
a good job and they may not. YOUNGMAN doesn't know which course is
better to pursue, it might be better to raise a noise about it. STARR
says he wired MINORI (phonetic) to make a strong representation about it.
YOUNGMAN will talk to CORCORAN about it and to STARR tomorrow.
6:10 PM
CORCORAN to LEO CROWLEY (Mayflower 871)
TC - T. V. (SOONG) is having dinner tonight with WAYNE TAYLER (Under
Secretary of Commerce). Can you tell me what happened this
afternoon?
LC - Oh--Oh, well I'll have to talk to WAYNE. We postponed the thing
until Tuesday.
