CORCORAN to DR. LUDWIK RAJCHMAN at MIchigan 1213, his home. The
following conversation took place:
TC - Doctor, I had breakfast with EDWARD BURLING (Of Covington, Burling,
Rublee, Acheson and Shorb Law Firm) this morning, the head of
Covington, Burling, and he said held take the Polish thing on.
LR - Fine!
TC - Now, Doctor, this is the wisest--this is DEAN ACHESON'S partner,
of course.
LR - I know.
TC - But this is the wisest, ablest lawyer in this town and one of the
wisest, ablest fellows in the world.
LR - Fine, fine!
TC - So you call him and tell him that I called you and he'll take it.
LR - Fine!
TC - And I suggested that he could use "SHAGGY" (LT. QUINN SHAUGHNESSY
of O.S.S.) to run around on it. Because you will need some legs.
LR - Sure!
TC - But he said he'd take it for you and he'd be very interested and
I went over the situation of the different economic status of Poland
since you got Silesia, Stetten and Danzig, and all the rest of it.
Now this (BURLING) is an able fellow. You couldn't have anything
better and he's willing to take it over. He's got too much to do
but he said he'd cut and chuck and do this himself. So there you
are, sir. I've never done anything better for you.
LR - Splendid! I'm awfully grateful. No, you could have done something
better.
(CORCORAN laughs)
You could have accepted it yourself.
TC - Oh, I'm not good at that. SHAGGY's back, by the way.
LR - Oh, I see. We heard that you would sign on SHAGGY.
TC - Well, what SHAGGY will do gonna keep SHAGGY sort of operating
on his own. But SHAGGY will--SHAGGY is a classmate of BURLING'S son
and BURLING'S son has just come out of the Army and has come back and
will probably work on this too. What I want to do is--I want to have
somebody like SHAGGY who hasn't yet got tangled up in other things.
I mean, the problem is always in this town to get somebody's time
and SHAGGY's new and he's not tangled up. And that's why I suggested
to him SHAGGY and his own son. All right, Doctor, you can find him
(BURLING) in the telephone book.
2:15 PM
CORCORAN to BEN SONNENBERG, Wickersham 2-3930, New York City. CORCORAN
said, "My Chinaman has been held over" and so CORCORAN did not get away.
CORCORAN must wait until SOONG leaves town before coming to New York City.
CORCORAN said that CHENNAULT (General of Flying Tigers) is going on a
lecture tour and CARL GETTS is his publicity man. CORCORAN asked BEN
to check on GETTS and call him and tell him who the best man in the
publicity business is. CORCORAN said that he is having dinner with CHENNAULT
tonight.
3:03 PM
CORCORAN to GEORGE KILLIOM of Democratic National Committee. They discuss
if either has had any luck re getting the President to accept the resigna-
tion of WARNER. Both said they haven't had any luck, but KILLIOM will
know soon.
