CO SUMMARY
September 14, 1945
8:35 AM
BILL YOUNGMAN to CORCORAN. YOUNGMAN said that T. V. SOONG is to see
the President at 11:15 A.M., and also that T. V. wants to see LEO
(CROWLEY ?). YOUNGMAN said he told SOONG that LEO wants to see T. V.
CORCORAN will call LEO.
8:43 AM
CORCORAN to GEORGE KILLIOM, of Democratic National Committee, at Wardman
Park Hotel. KILLIOM advised that "the boss" is going away today and won't
be back until after the weekend. CORCORAN wants him to accept the
resignation (WARNER of C.A.A.) before the 20th so he can get his rehearing.
KILLIOM will check on it today and call CORCORAN at his office. KILLIOM
said he was out with BOB (HANNEGAN ?) and ED (FLYNN ?) last night and
they said that BREWSTER's "fellow" would not get in.
8:53 AM
CORCORAN for LEO CROWLEY. Not in, but will call CORCORAN in a few
minutes. CORCORAN said that it is important that he talk to CROWLEY
before T. V. SOONG does, and that it is of the utmost importance that
both talk to CROWLEY before T. V. sees the President at 11:15 A.M.
Secretary will make sure that CROWLEY talks to CORCORAN first. CORCORAN
told the secretary that T. V. was out with WAYNE TAYLOR last night "and
he didn't do very well."
10:55 AM
MR. WYCHE (CECIL WYCHE, U. S. Attorney, Western District, South Carolina
and former law partner of JAMES F. BYRNES ?) for CORCORAN who had an
appointment on the outside. WYCHE will call again about 11:00 A.M
11:10 AM
CORCORAN to GEORGE KILLIOM at National Democratic Committee telling him
that PEPPER's Secretary (JIM CLEMENTS) had just had a most illuminating
talk with WELSH POGUE (Chairman of C.A.A.) PEPPER had sent a request to
POGUE that the rehearing be held-up pending his arrival back in the
country as he would like to participate. POGUE told CLEMENTS that he
intended to dispose of the matter 5 days after the petition was received
which would be on the twentieth, because he wanted WARNER to be in on
the hearing. CORCORAN said that he thought KILLIOM should let his boss
(BOB HANNEGAN) know. KILLIOM will call him.right away, and will call
CORCORAN back.
11:15 AM
CORCORAN to JIM CLEMENTS in Senator PEPPER's office. CLEMENTS said, "I
have an engagement there at 12:00 o'clock." TOM told JIM to tell "him"
what POGUE told FOKES, I hope you got the significance of that." "He
(POGUE) told him (FOKES) he wanted him to keep WARNER in and vote him
(WARNER) against you. I think you have to tell HANNEGAN right straight
that POGUE told you this morning that he was going to rush this rehearing
through so long as he had WARNER on the board; that he refused PEPPER's
request because he was gonna vote WARNER against him and therefore it is
absolutely essential that whether or not they're ready for a new appoint-
ment; that they get that vacancy today. He's (HANNEGAN) scared of CLAUDE
(PEPPER) so be rough about it."
