D. WORTH CLARK to TOM CORCORAN (Continued):
TC - Yeah. O.K.
WC - KEARNEY's (phonetic) in town.
TC - Yeah. Let's do some business on some of these things.
WC - Now, here. I just came up from WHERRY's office. He wanted me to
come up this morning. He was in a hole this afternoon. And this
fellow GILLENSKY (phonetic). We've got to get KEN out of this
God Damn hole some way. He's in a hole with this fellow GILLENSKY,
see? They've taken this thing up with WENDELL BERGE (Department of
Justice) or whatever you call him and all the rest of them.
TC - Yeah. But they won't get anywhere.
WC - And SO KEN told this fellow GIL--- told him that you were in
Providence--that I couldn't get hold of you. And that POLLEN was
on the West Coast. I lied like a damn trooper.
TC - Did you say that in front of GILLENSKY?
WC - Yeah.
TC - You put my name---my name in the pot with---
WC - Oh, hell. It was before, TOM. That was your suggestion. You said
you'd call KEN WHERRY and tell him we represent-
TC - Yeah, and I wanted to keep my name out of the thing. in front of
GILLENSKY. I wanted a private appointment between WHERRY and
POLLEN. I didn't want GILLENSKY to know who was spilling my name
around about United Fruit. Jesus Christ! Now the fat is in the
fire! But there's nothing we can do about it.
WC - Well, it's worse than that--
TC - Jesus Christ! Now that means that I'll lose United Fruit.
WC - WHERRY told GILLENSKY to stay around here. And then he put me on
the spot by-WHERRY did-right in front of GILLENSKY. And he says,
"Now you called me about this business, and I've got to see it
through. And just as soon as you get in touch with your folks,"
he said, "Will you let MR. GILLENSKY know?"
TC - Well, we'll never get in touch with our folks.
WC - Well, all I can do. I've got to call him in about two or three
days and get him out of town. Because WHERRY's in a mess on this
deal.
TC - Now GILLENSKY will be with STOKES (phonetic) next. Now you watch
and you see. Jesus Christ! Now God Damn it, he owed us the decency--
we gave it to him in confidence and he should have kept his mouth shut.
WC - The thing I said to WHERRY was precisely as you outlined it. I said
that we represented United Fruit and we would like to have the
executive vice-president, Mr. POLLEN, come down with me. And I
volunteered to take him down personally, you recall. And
TC - You see. GILLENSKY will just pick up these--
WC - Knows all about it. WHERRY talked to me Friday on the telephone.
GILLENSKY was sitting right there.
TC - So WHERRY let us down, boy.
WC - Well, that's all right.
TC - Well, now we'll be in more trouble. I guess we'd just better break
relations on the thing now because GILLENSKY is going to go to STOKES
on the rest of it anyway.
