Washington, D. C. October 9, 1945 CO SUMMARY 8:45 AM TOM CORCORAN to LEO CROWLEY at Mayflower. CORCORAN said he had talked with BOB last night and LEO replied that he did also; that BOB told LEO that "he (BOB) opened the thing up but that VANDENBURG didn't follow along very well with him". CORCORAN then said, "But he (BOB) said that VANDENBURG then went up and WHITE, both went up with CONNALLY to BYRNES and then they played ball. He said they didn't handle it awfully well in the open meeting but that they did go up with TOM CONNALLY to JIMMY and talked it very seriously. So I think JIMMY ought to be in pretty good shape this morning." LEO said, "BOB told me he gave JIMMY a note too. Then we'll wait to see what we hear this morning. I think this, TOM, that I'm better off to be independent and wait for his call, don't you?" CORCORAN said LEO had but little time and should talk to him (JIMMY) this afternoon. CORCORAN continued, "I found out who the knifer was on the (T. V.) SOONG business. It's FRANK COE (Division of Monetary Research), over in the Treasury." LEO said, "Well, you see that would be all right because the way that works out; he's the fellow that tried to knife us the time we got the gold for SOONG. We can take care of him. He's a little rat, TOM.' CORCORAN said, "I think we can get that committed this week, can't we?" LEO said, "I'll get hold of (WILLIAM H.) TAYLOR over here this morning." (TAYLOR, Treasury Department) 8:50 AM TOM CORCORAN to FRED VINSON. VINSON said he and Mrs. VINSON will attend Madam SOONG's dinner this Friday evening. 8:52 AM TOM CORCORAN to Speaker SAM RAYBURN who is not certain whether he can attend Madam SOONG's dinner Friday but will do so if he can. CORCORAN said, "You remember those articles I was telling you about in the Saturday Evening Post? Well, they're beginning to drop and one of them will be out in the next two days. Now, SAM, I worked like hell on those articles and so far as I'know I got you out of them completely." SAM said, "Well, I don't know what happened. I never did see any of them." CORCORAN continued, "Well, they had a lot of talk about you and (former Vice President) GARNER, you know. Now, SAM, I've seen the first two. I've done a lot of threatening and kicking and muscling around and you're out of the first two. GARY did an awfully dirty job on HART and LEE and COX and everybody. GARY just spilled his guts all over the thing--but you're not involved. Your name is out of the whole damned thing. SAM said, "Well, fine! CORCORAN said, "ED HART ought to be goddamned sore. GARY says HART changed his mind because of trouble the HAGUE machine was in up in New Jersey and a lot of things like that. But you're all right, SAM. SAM said, "Thanks, TOM." CORCORAN, continuing, said, "You're not in it at all. I haven't seen number three but there's no reason in hell why you should be in number three. SAM thanked CORCORAN again and said he'd see him Friday if possible.
