8:54 AM TOM CORCORAN to YOUNGMAN saying that VINSON and PATTERSON can attend the SOONG dinner and RAYBURN may be able to attend. They discuss the desirability of inviting FORRESTAL in the event RAYBURN cannot attend. TOM said that BARKLEY is the logical man to replace RAYBURN. They will discuss it later. 11:50 AM TOM CORCORAN to Miss BELLMORE in his office asking for calls and mail inasmuch as he has not been to the office this morning. Answer: HINCKLEY (ROBERT H., W.P.B?) called and BILL DEMPSEY is in the office waiting to see CORCORAN. TOM talked with the latter and told him that the Saturday Evening Post advance sheets of the article about CORCORAN had not come in but might come in the next mail and that therefore he would see DEMPSEY in CORCORAN's office this p.m. CORCORAN was in Senator PEPPER's office. 12:02 PM HENRY GRUNEWALD asked Mrs. BEHAN to tell CORCORAN that RILEY CAMPBELL was appointed last Thursday as head of the Penal Division of Internal Revenue; that THORNE, who was a competitor of CAMPBELL has come back from New York with a changed attitude; that he (HENRY) thought CORCORAN might want to talk to (JOSEPH J.) O'CONNELL, (Office of General Counsel) Treasury Department, again to see what the latest dope is concerning CAMPBELL and THORNE because HENRY believes that (JOHN P.) WENCHELL (Office of General Counsel, Treasury Department) is for THORNE and that O'CONNELL, who was against CAMPBELL, is now favorable to both CAMPBELL and THORNE. HENRY asked Mrs. BEHAN to remind CORCORAN about "the kid. HENRY also told her to tell CORCORAN that VANDERPOOL had called him this morning from New York and advised that he had received a letter from his son dated about five days ago. OK. 4:45 PM TOM CORCORAN told FERDINAND EBERSTADT (NYC Whitehall 4-8787, home Eldorado 5-0775) in confidence that he has an offer from ED NOBLE to sell to CORCORAN or his nominee 25% of the Blue Network stock that CHET LaROCHE and Time and Life had. EBERSTADT said he wouldn't be interested in going in with CORCORAN on the purchase but that he would be willing to buy it for redistribution. This deal would involve 100,000 shares and would be purchased in the name of ROBERT HINCKLEY. EBERSTADT said he would like to have some figures and CORCORAN said he would furnish them. 4:55 PM CORCORAN to Mr. TRUITT (pho). He said he is inviting Senator BARKLEY to dinner and wants to know if he should invite Mrs. BARKLEY also. TRUITT said she couldn't come but she likes to get invitations anyway. CORCORAN said he heard in Boston that JOE KENNEDY is going into China companies in a big way as part of his scheme to set up the Massachusetts- Oriental Trade again. TRUITT asked where T. V. (SOONG) is these days. CORCORAN said he's back in China. TRUITT asked who's representing SOONG here and CORCORAN said that YOUNGMAN was his undercover man (a "confidential man") over here and there are two Chinese with him. TRUITT said he has several Chinese companies he wants to take up with SOONG's man. CORCORAN suggested that he call YOUNGMAN about them tomorrow.
