1. Weather:
Scattered low clouds, increasing to broken middle clouds, with frequent
thunderstorms. Visibility unrestricted except in showers. Forecast: Contin-
ued thunderstorms and rain showers, gradually improving.
2. Soviet Participation:
Negative.
3. Enemy Situation:
a. Small enemy groups of approximately 20 men each continued to probe
along the entire 25th U.S. Infantry Division front, Air reports an enemy build-
up in an area 20-30 miles west and southwest of Masan, as well as an unknown
number of enemy tanks in a small village 11 miles east of Chinju and/or vehic
les in every small village. Increasing activity and movement in the enemy rear
areas in this sector have been observed. A PW from the 6th North Korean
Division states that the 7th North Korean Division began closing at Chinju on
17 August. An attack by an estimated enemy battalion supported by light artil-
lery effected a slight penetration of the positions of the 1st Battalion, 35th In-
fantry Regiment, with heavy fighting which continued throughout the night. After
a lull, the enemy resumed its attack against the 1st Battalion at 0600/20 (KT).
Later in the morning an attack was launched by another enemy battalion against
elements of the 24th U.S. RCT. Heavy fighting is in progress. (FECOM)

b. As of 2200/19 (KT) only 150-200 enemy troops in small groups re-
mained east of the Naktong River in the former Yongsan bridgehead. Enemy
pockets by-passed by the attacking 1st Provisional Marine Brigade were I°e-
ported mopped up by 0600/19 (KI). The 4th North Korean Division is believed
to have suffered heavy losses during this operation. Thirteen enemy artillery
pieces of 45-mm. to 122-mm. were captured. A PW reports iron boats with a
50 man capacity transported to the Naktong by truck were employed in the river
