GROUND In the northern sector, heavy enemy attacks against the 6 ROK Division were generally contained, but one tank-supported battalion pene- trated friendly positions to Uihung early 27 August. Enemy attacks launched against the ROK Capitol and 3d Divisions early 26 August were contained initially, but later the enemy succeeded in occupying Kigye, and driving to within approximately 3 miles of Pohang before being held. The southern sector remained quiet, aside from a limited attack on the 5th U.S. RCT which was repulsed. Action in the sectors of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division and the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division was limited to patrol engagements. Elements of the 1st ROK Division made a limited advance against light resistance. (FECOM) (SECRET) b. NAVY Naval surface forces patrolled the east coast shelling rail targets with excellent results. Aircraft from the PHILIPPINE SEA and VALLEY FORGE attacked enemy installations and supply routes between the 37th and 38th parallels. Marine aircraft from the BADOENG STRAIT flew continued effective close support of ground forces. (COMNAVFE) (SECRET) c. AIR FEAF flew 579 sorties of which 381 were combat sorties. Bomber Command flew 13 combat sorties 5 B-29s attacked the rail bridge at Munsan with direct hits causing damage. Eight B-29s dropped on Kilchu marshalling yards with heavy damage. Fifth Air Force flew 314 bombing and strafing sorties, 117 in close support, and 197 in interdiction. Twenty-four night intruders harassed enemy troops and vehicle movements, attacked supply centers, Kimpo and Suwon airfields, and military targets in 9 towns from Seoul to Sunchon.
