1. Situation in Brief
a. GROUND
The Commanding General EUSAK has assumed operational control
of the ROK I Corps, has organized Task Force Jackson under Major General
J.B. Coulter, and has issued orders to the Task Force to seize and to hold
the high ground north and east of Kigye, lost on 27 August. A heavy enemy
attack has forced back both flanks of the 3c. ROK Division. The 19th Regi-
ment, 6th ROK Division, was forced to withdraw, but the enemy attack was
contained southeast of Uihung. In the 1st ROK Division and 1st U.S. Cavalry
sectors, activity was confined to patrolling and small contact fights with
the enemy. Little activity was reported along the Naktong River in the 2d
U.S. Division area. Continuous probing action was made by the enemy along
the entire 25th U.S. Division front with some sporadic artillery and small
arms fire reported. (FECOMI) (SECRET)
b. NAVY
Surface forces patrolled the Korean east coast, hitting shore tar-
gets in support of troops as requested, while 7th Fleet aircraft struck tar-
gets in northeast Korea. BADOENG STRAIT aircraft supplied close support
to ground troops in South Korea. Navy surface forces patrolled the Korean
west coast and the Formosa Straits, while Navy air reconnoitered Korean
and Formosan waters. (FECOM) (SECRET)
C. AIR
During 27 August, FEAF reports 500 sorties, including 309 combat.
During the night of 27-28 August, 29 intruder sorties were flown. On 28
August forty-nine B-29's visually attacked Songjin and two targets of oppor-
tunity with excellent results. Eighteen B-29's visually attacked bridges in
central Korea and Chinnampo with fair to excellent results. On 27 August,
an enemy aircraft trailed a U.S. armed reconnaissance flight from north
of Andong to Ansong. The enemy aircraft pulled away when a friendly flight
