(maps attached)
From 0700/22 (EST) to 0700/23 (EST)
From 2100/22 (Korea) to 2100/23 (Korea)
1. Situation in Brief:
The most significant gains made along the U.N. front were
registered by the ROK II Corps, as one regiment of the 6th ROK Division
advanced 15 miles to south of Yonghyon, and another regiment advanced
over 25 miles along the east bank of the Chongchon River to the vicinity
of Hwasan, 17 miles southwest of Huichon. The 8th ROK Division advanced
17 miles to Pukchang, where a hostile battalion halted their drive on
Tokchon. U.S. I Corps continued mopping up operations between the
Taedong and Chongchon Rivers, as forward elements closed in on Anju
and Kunu. The 27th British Commonwealth Brigade advanced to the Chongchon
River via Anju, while the 1st ROK Division drove northeast to Kujang. On the
east coast the ROK Capitol Division continued its push, reaching the Kunamdae
River opposite Pukchong, after overcoming some enemy resistance at I-ri.
Minesweeping operations in the Wonsan area continued as rapidly as the
weather and equipment limitations would permit. Planes from U.S. escort
carriers provided close support for the minesweepers, while U.N. naval
vessels patrolled the general area and stood by for gunfire support missions.
Carrier planes made interdiction strikes northwest of Wonsan, On the west
coast, THESEUS aircraft attacked communication targets in the Chongju-
Pakchon area. Naval air flew 192 sorties on 22 October, and U.N. aircraft
under FEAF control flew 443 sorties, including 196 combat, On 23 October,
12 B-29's attacked rail and interdiction targets with fair to excellent
results. (FECOM) (SECRET)
2. Weather:
Scattered low, middle and high clouds over all Korea. Visibility 10
miles, lowering to 1 to 3 miles in early morning haze and ground fog. Fore-
cast: No change. (FEAF) (SECRET)
