Situation in Brief: GROUND In the south sector, the 25th U.S. Infantry Division was heavily engaged near midnight by strong enemy attacks along its entire front. The Division continues holding its general positions, but has been infiltrated in three different areas. Reserves have been committed against infiltrations. In the 2d U.S. Infantry Division area, the enemy crossed the Naktong in several places after midnight 31 August and engaged the Division in heavy fighting, penetrating one flank position, and forcing two friendly units to withdraw up to 1,000 yards. In its sector, the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division dispersed an enemy force which had crossed the Naktong in the vicinity of Tuksong and used its artillery to shell enemy positions northeast of Waeg- wan. No significant changes in the positions of the ROK forces, except for a 1,500 yard advance by the 3d ROK Division against stiffening enemy re- sistance. (FECOM) (SECRET) NAVY Fast carrier mobility made possible the diversion of PHILIPPINE SEA and VALLEY FORGE aircraft from air strike missions to close ground support for the 25th U.S. Infantry Division. HELENA, HAMNER, and CHAND- LER furnished naval gunfire support to troops in the Pohang area, while aircraft from SICILY gave close support to troops in the north and central sectors. ENDICOTT executed fire missions for the 25th U.S. Infantry Divi- sion. The ROK Navy made patrol landings and enemy shore point shelling operations among south and southwestern Korean coastal islands. Navy air and ships patrolled Korean and Formosan waters. (COMNAVFE) (SECRET) AIR On 31 August, FEAF aircraft flew 542 sorties of which 377 were combat. On the night of 31 August, 25 intruder sorties were flown. On 1 September, 18 B-29's attacked bridge targets in central Korea with fair to excellent results.
