Situation in Brief: GROUND In the southern sector, the 6th North Korean Division plus at least 2 North Korean regiments are heavily engaging the 25th U.S. Infantry Divi- sion along its entire front, with the enemy making some minor gains against the 5th and 24th U.S. RCT's, and a 6,000 yard penetration into the 35th U.S. RCT's sector. These RCT's, plus the 27th U.S. RCT, are counterattacking and have partially restored some positions. The 2d U.S. Infantry Division was heavily engaged by elements of three enemy divisions during the after- noon of 1 September, followed by a fairly quiet night. The 1st U.S. Cavalry Division continued defense of its sector and dispersed enemy patrols. The 1st and 6th ROK Divisions made small gains against continued enemy re- sistance. The enemy made slight gains between the ROK Capitol and the 3d ROK Divisions, but an attack by both Divisions at 0900/02 (KT) made some progress against moderate resistance. (FECOM) (SECRET) NAVY United Nations' surface ships patrolled the east, south, and west coasts of Korea. Shore bombardment was delivered where it was requested. Aircraft from PHILIPPINE SEA and VALLEY FORGE continued striking enemy sea and land transportation on the Korean west coast north of 37N. (COMNAVFE) (SECRET) AIR On 1 September, FEAF aircraft flew 529 sorties, of which 325 were combat. On the night of 1-2 September, 27 night intruder sorties were flown. On 2 September, 40 B-29's attacked targets along the battle line, bridges in Central Korea, Kyomipo marshaling yards and Kyomipo Iron Works with fair to excellent results. (FEAF) (SECRET) 2.
