1. Situation in Brief:
GROUND
The 25th U.S. Infantry Division is holding its positions along the
entire southern front against continued enemy pressure. The 24th and
35th U.S. RCT's are now defending their original MLR The 9th U.S. RCT
regrouped and counterattacked north-northwest supporting the 72d Medium
Tank Battalion and the 2d Ingineer Combat Battalion. Yongsan was re-
taken. The 1st U.S. Provisional Marine Brigade, attached to the 2d U.S.
Infantry Division, passed through elements of the 9th RCT and attacked
westward. Elements of the 23d and 38th U.S. RCT's attacked and consoli-
dated their positions. In the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division sector, heavy enemy
counterattacks forced the slight withdrawals of the 7th and 8th U.S. Cavalry
RCT's during the night. Attacks against the 1st and 6th ROK Divisions were
repulsed. Heavy enemy pressure in the soliang area caused the limited
withdrawals of the 17th and 18th ROK Regiments while the 3d ROK Division
and 21st U.S. RCT made minor gains. (FECOM) (SECRET)
NAVY
U.N. naval and naval air forces continued patrolling the east, south,
and west coasts of Korea. Naval gunfire effectively executed call fire mis-
sions as requested by ground forces. Planes from Task Force 77 continued
close support of ground troops, with excellent results. (FECOM)(SECRET)
AIR
On 2 September, FEAF aircraft flew 530 sorties, of which 368
were combat. On the night of 2-3 September, 26 intruder sorties were
flown. On 3 September, 64 B=29's were dispatched to attack targets behind
the enemy lines and bridges in central Korea. Results were reported as
good to excellent. Four U.S. aircraft were lost. (FEAF) (SECRET)
