1. Situation in Brief:
GROUND
In the south sector, the enemy continued harassing fire against the 25th
U.S. Infantry Division forward positions, while friendly forces engaged enemy
pockets in the rear area. No ground was gained in a heavy enemy attack
against the 24th U.S. RCT. Airdrops to the isolated 2d battalion, 27th U.S. RCT,
are continuing. The enemy abandoned considerable materiel and supplies dur-
ing the withdrawal caused by heavy attacks of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division and
the 1st U.S. Marine Brigade. In the center sector, the 27th U.K. Infantry Bri-
gade relieved the 3d battalion, 23d U.S. RCT, on the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division
south flank. Three companies of the 8th U.S. Cavalry RCT are isolated in the
walled city near Kasan and continue to hold out against enemy attacks. In the
eastern sector, the 8th ROK Division is defending against a penetration by
elements of three enemy regiments in the vicinity of Pohang. The penetration
created a ten thousand yard gap which is now being filled by the 3d ROK Regi-
ment in a move to the west. The situation remains obscure in the ROK Capitol
Division area, with the enemy reportedly penetrating in considerable force east
and west of Kyongju. The 3d ROK Division continues to hold north of Pohang
against strong enemy pressure. (FECOM) (SECRET)

trations in gunfire support of ground troops in the Pohang area, and naval gun-
fire gave close support to ground troops in the Masan area. ROK Navy ships
and landing parties gathered information from varied sources in operations on
the Korean south and west coasts. Task Force 77 planes hit many targets in
the Pyongyang area. Naval ships patrolled La Perouse Straits, and both ships
and planes patrolled Korean and Formosan waters. (COMNAVFE) (SECRET)
