1. Situation in Brief:
GROUND
The 25th U.S. Infantry Division defended its sector against enemy
probing attacks and continued elimination of an estimated 6 enemy pockets
in rear areas. The 2d U.S. Infantry Division adjusted its positions north-
ward to join the 27th U.K. Infantry Brigade, and made a limited attack in
the 23d U.S. RCT sector to gain positions on more favorable terrain. An
estimated two enemy battalions attacked elements of the 38th U.S. RCT on
the morning of 8 September; results have not been reported. The 1st U.S.
Cavalry Division withdrew to better defensive positions in the Waegwan
area. The 8th U.S. Cavalry RCT is advancing slowly, supported by air,
against moderate enemy resistance. The enemy in unknown strength
attacked along the 15th ROK Regiment front but made no advance. Yongchon
was retaken by the 8th ROK Division the afternoon of 8 September after
the enemy had earlier entered the city. Task Force Jackson, redesignated
Task Force Church, advanced slowly against stubborn enemy resistance
in the Kyongju-Angang area. The enemy regained positions south of Angang
during a night attack. The 3d ROK Division, assisted by naval gun fire,
repulsed an enemy attack 2 miles south of Pohang. (FECOM) (SECRET)
NAVY
Naval guns provided interdiction call fire in the southern sector
and supported ground troops in the Pohang area. ROK naval vessels carried
out operations among the islands on the south and southwest coasts. United
Kingdom and Commonwealth ships and planes struck shipping along the
west coast. BADOENG STRAIT and SICILY aircraft hit enemy transportation
facilities in west-central Korea. (FECOM) (SECRET)
AIR
Largely in support of ground operations on the northern front,
FEAF aircraft, on 7 September, flew 537 sorties, including 346 combat.
During the night of 7-8 September, 31 intruders attacked enemy communi-
cations. On 8 September, Bomber Command dispatched 43 B-29's: 23
