JOINT DAILY SITREP NO. 80
(maps attached)
From 0800/14 (EDT) to 0800/15 (EDT)
From 2100/14 (KT) to 2100/15 (KT)
1. Situation in Brief:
GROUND
a, Marine elements from the 1st U.S. Marine Division stormed
and captured the key island of Wolmi in the Inchon Harbor early 15 Sep-
tember (KT). The operation was completed in the record time of less
than 30 minutes with minimum casualties. The capture of the island and
the causeway that connects the key island with the city of Inchin followed
a clocklike schedule that the Marines, warships, and aircraft adhered to
strictly. The bombardment effectively reduced every military emplacement
on the island during a period of 45 minutes that preceded the Marine assault.
During the ship bombardment, carrier aircraft joined in the attack that
reduced every position. Then came the rockets, and the Marines were
ashore. (FECOM) (SECRET)
b. In the 25th U.S. Infantry Division sector, enemy patrols probed
the entire front during 14 September. Elements of the 27th U.S. RCT re-
pulsed an attack by an estimated company during the afternoon of 14 Sep-
tember followed by a heavy enemy concentration of mortar fire during the
night. An enemy attack on elements of the 24th U.S. RCT caused a slight
loss of ground early in the morning of 15 September, with fighting continuing
as of 0900 (KT). The 35th U.S. RCT repulsed small enemy probing attacks.
The 9th U.S. RCT captured a hill southwest of Kumi, but counterattacks by
an enemy battalion caused some loss of ground on the evening of 14 Septem-
ber and morning of 15 September. Friendly forces are counterattacking to
regain positions. The 38th U.S. RCT repulsed an enemy attack at midnight
on 14 September. Elements of the 5th U.S. Cavalry RCT regained a hill
south of Taegu while elements of the 8th U.S. Cavalry RCT made an ad-
vance of 1,500 yards. The 11th and 15th ROK Regiments of the 1st ROK
Division captured 2 hills slightly east of the walled city during the early
evening of 14 September. A reinforced enemy battalion launched a counter-
attack at 0300/15 (KT) with results unreported. The 8th ROK Division
continued to advance to a general line from Kuman-Sa-Ongnyong. Strong
friendly patrols penetrated up to 2,500 yards capturing numerous assorted
weapons, including a 122-mm. howitzer. The 3d and Capitol ROK Divisions
progressed slowly because of swollen streams. At 0740/15 (KT) the 18th
