From 0800/15 (EDT) to 0800/16 (EDT)
From 2100/15 (KT) to 2100/16 (KT)
1. Situation in Brief:
GROUND
a. U.S. X Corps: The landing in the Inchon area gained momentum
as additional troops and materiel flowed ashore. U.S. and ROK Marine units
swept through Inchon, rapidly liberating the city. As the assault echelon
continued its drive to the east, North Korean security forces were quickly
overcome, while violent attacks by supporting Naval aircraft destroyed
200 enemy vehicles, some tanks, and mechanized forces which attempted
to converge on Inchon. At 1500/16 (KT) leading elements were 4 miles
east of Inchon, astride the Seoul highway. It is estimated that 17,000 per-
sonnel are now ashore, as well as a considerable amount of heavy equipment,
including tanks and 155-mm. howitzers, (FECOM) (SECRET)
b. EUSAK: Despite severe limitations on air support imposed by
inclement weather, the 8th U.S. Army in Korea, took the offensive on a
90 mile front extending from Chindong to Yongchon early on 16 September.
On the left flank of the 25th U.S. Infantry Division, elements made gains
varying from 200 to 1,000 yards; while on the right flank progress of the
9th U.S. RCT was retarded by stiff enemy resistance, However, the 23d
and 38th U.S. RCT's in the center and on the right of the 2d U.S. Infantry
Division sector advanced rapidly for distances of 1,500 to 2,000 yards.
Although the enemy offered strong opposition in the central portion of the
1st U.S. Cavalry Division zone, the 5th U.S. Infantry RCT, supported by
extremely heavy and effective artillery fire, advanced steadily; and by
mid-afternoon, its leading elements were on the east bank of the Naktong
River, south of Waegwan. Securing its left flank, the RCT began attacking
northward. ROK troops of the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division sector were
making consistent progress against moderate enemy resistance. Heavy
fighting continues in the walled city north of Taegu. On the east coast,
3d ROK Division patrols, attempting to cross the Hyongsan River, were
repulsed by withering enemy small arms fire. (FECOM) (SECRET)

In the Inchon area, all combat and logistics schedules are being
