JOINT SITREP NO. 553
(Maps attached)
From 0700/17 Nov (EST) to 0700/20 Nov (EST)
From 2100/17 Nov (Korea) to 2100/20 Nov (Korea)
1. Weather:
The period began with marginal weather, with low scattered and
broken cloud cover and rain throughout Korea, and fog in the central
sector. On the second and third days it cleared and was operational and
generally good, with some light fog. Temperatures ranged from a low
of 21° to a high of 53° 9 F. (FEAF) (SECRET)
2. Enemy Situation:
Enemy activity increased somewhat in the KUMHWA area and north-
east of PANMUNJOM in mid-period, but remained generally light elsewhere
across the front. Principal action occurred in the SNIPER RIDGE area. A
number of enemy attacks of platoon and two-platoon strength were made
against UN positions on SNIPER RIDGE during the last two days of the period,
with engagements of up to five hours' duration. Similar attacks were made
against UN positions on a hill known as ROCKY POINT, (east of SNIPER
RIDGE) on all three days of the period, with engagements of up to three hours
duration. All of these attacks were repulsed. In the west sector, during the
night of 18-19 November and in the early morning of 19 November, enemy
groups of undetermined strength made three attacks against MLR positions
about ten miles northeast of PANMUNJOM, Slight penetrations of the MLR
were effected by the first two enemy attacks but UN elements restored the
position in each instance; the third attack was repulsed. Elsewhere across
the front, minor probing attacks and scattered patrol clashes were reported,
involving generally small enemy groups in usually brief engagements. Hos-
tile mortar and artillery fire for the period totalled approximately 27, 300
rounds, of which about 13, 300 rounds fell in the IX US Corps sector - mostly
in the 2d ROK Division area. The total of enemy mortar and artillery fire
for the week ending 19 November, inclusive, was approximately 67,000
rounds - the lowest weekly total since the week ending 17 September.
