The President SECRET 1 JOINT DAILY SITREP NO. 89 From 0800/23 (EDT) to 0700/24 (EST) From 2100/23 (korea) to 2100/24 (Korea) 1. Situation in Brief: GROUND U.N. Forces continued their attack on Seoul which is defended by three determined enemy regiments. The 5th U.S. Marine RCT repulsed a counterattack by 1000 enemy troops during the afternoon of 23 Septem- ber. The 1st U.S. Marine RCT advanced to the Han River through Yongdungpo south of Seoul and commenced crossing operations on the morning of 24 September. U.S. Forces patrolling in the Suwon area reported no enemy contact 8 miles south of Suwon as of the morning of 24 September. In the Eighth Army area, advances continue on all fronts without any major enemy action. On the south flank, the 25th U.S. Infantry Division advanced against generally light resistance to within 6 miles of Chinju and 8 miles of Sachon. The 2d U.S. Infantry Division observed evidence of enemy withdrawals as the Division approached Hyopchon. Elements of the 24th U.S. Infantry Division captured Songju from the North on 23 September against little opposition. East of Songju, elements of the 27th U.K. Infantry Brigade withdrew from commanding terrain in the face of a strong local enemy attack. Sangju, a vital north-south commun- ications line, was captured by elements of the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division as other elements crossed the Naktong. To the eastward, ROK troops continue to pursue the enemy, encountering light scattered resistance and booby- trapped buildings. Northernmost elements have advanced to within 10 miles of Andong. In the Uisong area, the enemy 8th Division received a severe beating, losing about 2,000 troops and large quantities of weapons, equipment, and food supplies. (FECOM) (SECRET) NAVY HELENA supported the northward progress of the 3d ROK Division northeast of Pohang with devastating gun fire, demoralizing enemy troops. ROCHESTER and TOLEDO supported the troops in the Seoul area. MADDOX and THOMAS patrolling to the northward along the east coast, ENDICOTT patrolling along the south coast, and ATHABASKAN and ROK PC 704 patrol- ing along the southwest coast fired at targets of opportunity in their areas.
