1. Situation in Brief:
GROUND
In the zone of the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division, troops of the 7th U.S.
Cavalry RCT seized Chongju, reducing the distance between the U.S. Eighth
Army and U.S. X Corps to approximately 45 miles. In a sustained north-
ward drive on the east coast, elements of the 3d ROK Division captured
Yongdok The enemy in scattered groups offered light to moderate resis-
tance throughout the Eighth Army zone. The heaviest resistance was en-
countered in the zone of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division as friendly troops
attacked Hyopehon, and in the 24th U.S. Infantry Division zone in the vic-
inity of Kumchon. Against stubborn enemy resistance, the friendly advance
on Seoul from the north was limited to 750 yards, while on the south the
32d U.S. RCT advanced 5,000 yards, captured commanding terrain along
the Han River, and later crossed the river. (FECOM)(SECRET)
NAVY
HELENA and WORCHESTER provided gunfire support for the
rapidly advancing ROK troops north of Pohang, ROCHESTER and TOLEDO
provided similar support on both sides of the Han River west of Seoul.
MADDOX and BRUSH, returning from a coastal sweep to Samchok, reported
no enemy troop movement along the east coast highway and no significant
water-borne traffic. PHILIPPINE SEA, VALLEY FORGE, and BOXER
aircraft continued to attack enemy rail, road, and water transport in west-
central Korea. Escort carrier aircraft flew close support missions for
U.N. troops in the Seoul beachhead. (COMNAVFE)(SECRET)
AIR
On 24 September, FEAF established a new record of 728 sorties
including 432 combat. Fighters attacked large troop and vehicle concen-
trations in every sector of the southeast battle zone. Bombers, operating
both day and night, attacked communications and military industrial areas
with excellent results. On 25 September, FEAF Bomber Command dis-
patched 50 B-29's which attacked communications and military installations.
