1. Situation in Brief:
GROUND
Advances continued throughout the Eighth Army zone, encountering
no major enemy resistance from the retreating, disorganized enemy. U.S.
troops seized Chinju against moderate resistance and continued to advance
10 miles northwestward, captured Hyopchon and Kochang, seized Kumchon
and continued to advance toward Yongdong, entered Chochiwon and Ham-
chang. ROK units continued advancing northward seizing Yechon, Andong
and Songchon, 10 miles north of Yongdok. General MacArthur announced
the capture of Seoul, with only pockets of resistance being encountered
during the afternoon of 26 September. (FECOM) (SECRET)
NAVY
U.N. cruisers and destroyers continued patrolling Korean waters,
interdicting the use of the east coast highway to the enemy fleeing north,
providing gunfire support as requested by forces ashore, protecting the
Inchon unloading operations, and attacking enemy forces on off-shore islands.
Carrier-based naval aircraft struck rail, road, and water transports near
Seoul to prevent enemy movement into the area, and provided close support
for the advancing troops. On 25 September, 262 naval air sorties were

AIR
On 25 September, FEAF aircraft flew 596 sorties including 375
combat. Fighter bombers and B-26's attacked enemy forces displaced by
the advance of the Eighth Army, killing an estimated 1,400. On 26 Septem-
ber, FEAF Bomber Command dispatched 53 B-29's which attacked a nitro-
gen plant, a hydro-electric plant, and enemy communications with generally
unobserved to excellent results. (FEAF) (SECRET)
