1. Situation in Brief:
GROUND
The 187th U.S. Airborne RCT eliminated enemy resistance on the
Kumpo Peninsula, In the 8th Army Zone, friendly forces continue their
blockade, capturing prisoners of war in large numbers. An estimated
4,000 North Korean troops, half of whom are reported to be wounded,
engaged elements of the 8th ROK Division in an effort to escape from
their encirclement. The ROK Capitol Division and the 3d ROK Division
met in the vicinity of Yangyang, 5 miles north of the 38th parallel, while
elements of the 3d ROK Division entered Chosan, 71/2020 miles north of the

NAVY
Minesweeper MAGPIE struck a mine during sweeping operations on
the east coast and sank. A ROK YMS also struck a mine on the southwest
coast, but is believed salvageable. Personnel casualty lists are not yet
complete. PHILIPPINE SEA, BOXER, and VALLEY FORGE aircraft
continued interdiction operations in westcentral Korea, and BADOENG
STRAIT aircraft provided close support for troops in the Seoul area.
Incomplete report totals naval aircraft sorties on 1 October as 194.

AIR
On 1 October, FEAF aircraft fiew 681 sorties, including 345 combat.
Only 56 close support sorties were flown south of the 38th parallel as
compared to 267 one week ago. On 2 October 37 B-29's were dispatched
to attack bridges, highways and a military training area near Chongjin.
