Situation in Brief: GROUND The 1st U.S. Marine Division encountered stubborn resistance and minefields south of Uijongbu. The 7th U.S. Infantry Division has been ordered to Pusan, effective upon completion of relief, by the 1st U.S. Cav- alry Division. North Korean troops established a strong roadblock between Kumchon and Taejon, permitting an estimated 2,000 enemy troops to slip through during the night. Elements of the 3d ROK Division advanced 15 miles north of the 38th parallel to Tongcho encountering little opposition. An air observer reports that at 1500/03 (KT) leading elements of the Division were only 2 miles southeast of Kansong. Elements of the 6th ROK Division entered Churichon, 8 miles south of the parallel. (FECOM)(SECRET NAVY Strong patrols were maintained off the east and west coasts of Korea. Minesweeping operations were conducted off the east coast and off Kunsan on the west coast. PHILIPPINE SEA and VALLEY FORGE air- craft continued strikes against targets in the west central part of Korea. BADOENG STRAIT aircraft provided air support for troops north of Seoul. A total of 218 sorties were flown by naval aircraft on 2 October. (COMNAV- FE)(SECRET) AIR On 2 October, FEAF aircraft flew 573 effective sorties, including 275 combat. The Bomber Command's major effort was an attack on the military training area at Nanam, far north of Wonsan on the east coast. On 3 October, the FEAF Bomber Command dispatched 26 B-29's to attack the training area at Miryok and to continue the attack on enemy communi- cations. (FEAF)(SECRET) 2.
