1. Situation in Brief:
Elements of the U.S. I Corps successfully broke contact with an
enemy battalion near Seoul at noon on 4 January and by early afternoon all
units of the U.S. I and IX Corps had withdrawn south of the frozen Han
River. The 29th United Kingdom Infantry Brigade Group reported 300 men
missing in action and 12 tanks lost in a hostile ambush north of Seoul early
on 4 January. At 1200/05(KT), the U.S. Eighth Army initiated a withdrawal
further south to defense line "D" The only contact reported in the U.S. X
Corps sector occurred in an area 9 miles southwest of Hongchon where an
estimated 3 enemy regiments engaged the 8th ROK Regiment; and near
Haanhung, 11 miles southeast of Hoengsong, where an attack by a hostile
battalion caused elements of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division to withdraw.
There were no further reports from the 31st and 32₫ Regiments of the 2d
ROK Division isolated in the Kapyong area. The 36th ROK Regiment extri-
cated itself from encirclement and has been assembling in Hoengsong.
With the exception of 1 battalion of the 9th ROK Division which was last
reported surrounded 5 miles west of Yongpo, and the 31st and 32d ROK
Regiments, all ROK units east of the U.S. IX Corps sector are in the process
of withdrawing to or establishing new defense positions or assembling in re-
serve. Planes from Task Group 96.8 provided close support for troops
in the Seoul area. ROCHESTER provided gunfire support in the Inchon area.
U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 785 sorties. (FECOM) (SECRET)
