JOINT DAILY SITREP NO. 106
(maps attached)
From 0700/10 (EST) to 0700/11 (EST)
From 2100/10 (Korea) to 2100/11 (Korea)
1. Situation in Brief:
The U.N. offensive continues to penetrate deeper into north
Korea, although resistance by hostile forces is gradually increasing.
The most significant gains were registered by the 6th ROK Division in
the Kumhwa area. In a two-pronged drive, the 7th ROK Regiment
advanced to the road junction 8 miles southeast of Pyonggang, while
the 2d ROK Regiment entered the town of Choso. In Wonsan, heavy
street fighting continued throughout most of the period, as the ROK
Capitol Division entered the city to assist the 3d ROK Division in
securing the airfield and mopping up enemy remnants. By 1200/11 (KT),
the Wonsan airfield was opened for U.N. aircraft. On the western portion
of the front, flank regiments of the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division made some
advances against decreasing resistance; however, the 8th U.S. Cavalry
Regiment could make no significant gains against stubborn, well-entrenched
forces. The 1st ROK Division launched an attack northward from an area
approximately 15 miles east of Kaesong. The concentration of naval
strength off Wonsan included ROCHESTER, WORCESTER, HELENA,
MADDOX, THOMAS, and DEHAVEN on blockade and fire-support duty
and in preparation for future operations.
SWENSON, COLLETT with
12 U.S., 9 Japanese, and 3 ROK mine-sweepers were opening a channel
into Wonsan through enemy minefields. PHILIPPINE SEA and LEYTE,
escorted by MANCHESTER and 8 destroyers conducted air strikes in the
Wonsan area, while other surface ships conducted blockade, reconnaissance
and offensive air operations off northwest Korea. FEAF aircraft flew
486 effective sorties, including 256 combat. On 11 October, FEAF Bomber
Command dispatched 26 B-29's and 4 RB-29's to continue attacks on
bridges and enemy communications. (FECOM) (SECRET)
