Situation in Brief: Troops of the 3d ROK Division drove a mile north of Wonsan, while the ROK Capitol Division seized high ground in the city and near the airfield. Elements of the 6th and 8th ROK Divisions converged on Pyonggang, and continued on 3 miles to the northwest, Other elements of the 8th ROK Division, driving west from Chorwon, reached the town of Songhyon. The 1st ROK Division advanced north to Kuhwa. The 1st U.S. Cav- alry Division continued to make limited gains against light to heavy resis- tance as the 5th U.S. Cavalry RCT drove almost to Yuga; the 8th U.S. Cav- alry RCT advanced north to within 7 miles of Kumchon; and the 7th U.S. Cavalry RCT advanced northward, on the west side of the Yesong River, to Kwangsok, The 1st U.S. Marine Division continues outloading in Inchon, and the remaining elements of the 7th U.S. Infantry Division are enroute to Pusan® Minesweepers in the Wonsan area were diverted from the south channel to the approach between Ung and Yo Islands, Minesweepers PLEDGE and PIRATE struck mines during the late afternoon and sank. Aircraft from the large carriers supported the minesweeps and struck various other tar- gets ashore, Elements of the British Navy conducted air strikes off the northwest coast of Korea. A total of 286 sorties were flown by Naval air- craft on 11 October. FEAF aircraft flew 420 effective sorties, of which 200 were combat. The Fifth Air Force occupied Wonsan Airfield and found runways to be in good condition. On 12 October, 27 B-29's were dis- patched, to attack marshaling yards, warehouses, bridges, and communi- cations targets in north Korea. (FECOM) (SECRET) 2. Weather: Ceilings on 12 October range from unlimited over north Korea to scattered and broken at 3,000 feet over south Korea. Visibility, gener- ally 8 to 10 miles, except lowering to 1 to 3 miles in light rain showers and early morning haze. Forecast for 13 October is generally the same, except for a slight over-all increase in cloud coverage. (FEAF) (SECRET) 3. Soviet Participation: Negative.
