1. Situation in Brief:
During the night of 7-8 November, very heavy traffic was sighted
moving southeastwardly from the Yalu River. Of approximately 750 ve-
hicles, the majority were moving out of Sakchu. Hostile action along the
immediate front of the Eighth Army, however, consisted chiefly of light
probing attacks and patrol action. Elements of the 24th U.S. Infantry
Division and the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade, supported by air,
executed a successful limited attack in the Pakchon area, killing half of
an enemy concentration of 800 troops. Friendly patrols, ranging 5 miles
north of Chonghyon, reported no contact; but the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division
experienced increasing enemy activity to its front and repulsed 5 small
probing attacks. The heaviest fighting occured in Tokchon, as elements of
the 8th ROK Division, supported by air strikes, drove an enemy regiment
from the city. Other ROK II Corps units repulsed 4 small-scale attacks
without loss of positions. On the east coast, guerrillas attacked a battalion
of the newly-arrived 65th U.S. Infantry RCT at Yonghung. The 1st U.S.
Marine Regiment repulsed an enemy attack at Majon, while the 5th U.S.
Marine Regiment made a 3-mile advance against light resistance near
Pujon. The enemy withdrew from contact opposite the 7th U.S. Marine
Regiment in the Sudong area, as friendly patrols ranging 2,500 yards to
the front failed to locate the hostile forces. PHILIPPINE SEA, VALLEY
FORGE, and LEYTE, operating with screen, launched carrier plane attacks
against the first span on the Korean side of the international bridges north-
west of Sakchu, North Korean troops, and transportation facilities from
Pungsan to Sinanju. BADOENG STRAIT and SICILY launched close air
support strikes in support of the 7th U.S. Infantry Division. ROCHESTER
and destroyers offered fire support at Songjin, Iwon, Hungnam, and Wonsan,
as minesweeping and unloading operations continued at Iwon. CONSTANCE
and destroyers patrolled in the vicinity of Chinnampo. Naval air flew 318
sorties on 7 November, and U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 475
sorties, including 292 combat. On 8 November, 78 B-29's visually attacked
Sinuiju and surrounding area with generally excellent results. (FECOM)
