Situation in Brief: The 1st U.S. Cavalry Division captured Namchonjom, the 1st ROK Division seized Singye, and the 8th ROK Division reached the vicinity of Koksan. The 8th ROK Division encountered little opposition during its 30-mile thrust northwest to Koksan, and leading elements were reported by friendly air to have reached the south bank of the Nan River. The 1st ROK Division encountered stubbornly resisting hostile forces supported by at least 6 tanks slightly north of Singye. On the east coast, elements of the ROK Capitol Division broke through thinly-held Communist lines and advanced through Yonghung, while other elements of the Division are heavily engaged in the Ko area. Minesweeping operations continued in the Wonsan area. MISSOURI, WORCESTER, ATHABASKAN, WARRAMUNGA, GURKE, and HENDERSON bombarded targets of opportunity on the north- east coast. HELENA and COCKADE bombarded targets of opportunity on the northeast coast and then patrolled southward. Planes from PHILIPPINE SEA, LEYTE, VALLEY FORGE, and BOXER hit enemy defenses and trans- portation facilities in the Wonsan area. Planes from THESEUS struck targets in the Chinnampo area. There were 226 naval air sorties on 14 October, and FEAF aircraft flew 536 sorties including 257 combat The Cargo Command flew a record of 268 sorties which lifted 1,324 tons of passengers and freight. On 15 October, 23 B-29's were dispatched to con tinue the attack against enemy communications and transportation targets. (FECOM)(SECRET) 2. Weather: Scattered low clouds with generally good visibility over all Korea. Forecast: Broken low clouds over north Korea becoming broken to over- cast over south Korea. Visibility 8 to 10 miles lowering to 1 to 3 miles in light rain and early morning fog and haze. (FEAF) (SECRET) 3. Soviet Participation: Negative.
