1. Situation in Brief:
By
Only a few minor engagements occurred during the period. The
heaviest fighting took place in the ROK III Corps area where elements of
the 18th and 23d ROK Regiments engaged 2 enemy battalions northwest of
Namdae, inflicting an estimated 300 casualties. In U.S. IX Corps' patrol
actions, elements of the 6th ROK Division engaged 2 CCF companies, ap-
proximately 7 miles west of Ichon, and the 27th British Commonwealth
Infantry Brigade encountered a smaller group farther east. In the U.S.
X Corps area, patrols entered Wonju without opposition. However, in
the Corps' rear area, numerous sightings and contacts indicated the con-
tinued movement south of considerable numbers of organized guerrillas
and North Korean troops which threaten supply routes and installations.,
particularly in the Yechon-Andong area. Task Force 77 aircraft flew 169
sorties and aircraft from the BATAAN flew 35 sorties. On 17 January,
U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 797 sorties. (FECOM) (SECRET)
