Situation in Brief: The two-pronged drive by the U.S. I Corps toward Pyongyang was stalled by stubbornly resisting hostile forces supported by armor, However, the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division, repulsing a counterattack, entered the capital from the south at 1130/19 (KT), followed by the 1st ROK Divi- sion from the east at 1415. On the Corps' left flank, the 24th U.S. Infantry Division advanced against negligible resistance to the south bank of the Taedong River opposite Chinnampo, while the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade was closing in on Kyomipo. The 7th ROK Division advanced to Sokchu The 8th ROK Division continued to move west of Yangdok, while the 6th ROK Division, after entering Yangdok from the east, turned north for a reported advance of 24 miles. Naval air and surface ships continued to pound enemy communications in northeast Korea. The Wonsan sweeping activity continues with one vessel sunk and a freighter damaged by mines. Naval air flew 252 sorties on 18 October, and U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 489 sorties, including 305 combat. Twenty-four B-29's attacked rail and highway bridges, and the ammunition storage area just north of Pyongyang. (FECOM)(SECRET) 2. Weather: Low scattered clouds over all Korea. Visibility 10, miles, lower- ing to 1 to 3 miles. Forecast: Low, middle and high overcast over all Korea, becoming scattered in north Korea by 0900 (KT), and becoming scattered in south Korea by end of period.
