1. Situation in Brief:
The powerful enemy counteroffensive which caused the collapse
of the ROK II Corps, in the center of the U.N. line, and penetrations in other
portions of the U.S. Eighth Army zone, has caused the withdrawal of the U.S.
I and IX Corps troops to defensive positions along a general line from the
mouth of the Chongchon River northeast to Pakchon, east to Won, southeast
to Pukchang, thence southeast to Taeul, and on to the U.S. X Corps boundary.
The 25th U.S. Infantry Division was placed under the operational control of
the U.S. I Corps. The U.S. IX Corps assumed responsibility for that portion
of the front previously assigned to the ROK II Corps. Strong, well-coordi-
nated enemy attacks, in many instances supported by mounted cavalry, con-
tinued to force friendly withdrawals along U.S. I and IX Corps fronts. Ele-
ments of the 24th U.S. Infantry Division received heavy attacks early in the
morning near Ansim, while the 12th and 15th Regiments of the 1st ROK
Division have been constantly engaged. At last report, enemy forces were
in the rear of the entire 15th Regiment near Yongsan. The center and left
flank of the 25th U.S. Infantry Division were forced to withdraw due to con
stant heavy pressure near Yongsan and Ipsok. Enemy attacks up to Division
strength supported by rockets and recoiless weapons against the 2d U.S.
Infantry Division caused some loss of ground. ROK elements in Tokchon
and Maengsan are reported to be surrounded by hostile forces. Elements of
the 6th ROK Division continued defending in the Pukchang area, while rem-
nants of the 7th and 8th ROK Divisions were reorganizing in the rear of the
6th ROK Division. Pukchang was reported to be in enemy hands with 4 enemy
regiments converging on the town from the north, northeast, and east. Air
observed 2,000 enemy cavalry in Sochang, 11 miles south-southeast of
Pukchang. The 1st U.S. Marine Division's attack west of Yudam was abruptly
halted by strong hostile counterattacks which have been continuous since
mid-afternoon on 27 November. Three CCF regiments attacking the 1st U.S.
Marine Division in the Yudam area cut the friendly MSR to the south in several
