Situation in Brief: Strong enemy forces launched 3 attacks, increasing in intensity, against the 8th U.S. Cavalry RCT during the night of 1-2 November. Although these attacks were repulsed, reports indicate that elements of the RCT were isolated. Another enemy force enveloped positions of the 1st Battalion of the 5th U.S. Cavalry RCT and isolated 1 company. Late reports indicate that the company has rejoined the Battalion which was still heavily engaged on the morning of 2 November. Other elements of the 5th U.S. Cavalry RCT are en- route to assist the 8th U.S. Cavalry RCT. The enemy maintained light contact with the 12th Regiment of the 1st ROK Division, but attacked with increasing intensity the 15th Regiment, forcing a slight withdrawal during the night. The Regiment was still heavily engaged on the morning of 2 November. Another sharp attack against the 11th Regiment of the 1st ROK Division was repulsed. The 8th ROK Division broke contact with the enemy while withdrawing to a line extending from 3 miles east of Yongbyon to Won. The 7th ROK Division also broke contact while withdrawing to a line from Won to Kaechon, but regained contact on 2 November. In the 24th U.S. Infantry Division sector, all units are holding in their present positions. Many mines were sighted at Chinnampo Harbor, as sweeping continued on both coasts. Ships are on fire-support stand-by duty on the east coast. Naval air flew 61 sorties on 1 November, and U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 503 sorties, including 194 combat. (FECOM) (SECRET) 2. Weather: Clear with occasional broken low clouds in isolated areas. Visibility lowering to 1 to 3 miles in early morning haze. Forecast: Clear, becoming scattered low clouds by 1300 (KT).
