Situation in Brief: A strong hostile force, estimated at 7,000, launched what appears to have been a coordinated attack south of Wonju on the afternoon of 10 January, with separate efforts striking the 2d U.S. Infantry Division's positions from the northeast and northwest. At 1245, an enemy company engaged the east flank elements of the 38th U.S. RCT; enemy forces in this sector gradually built up until an estimated 2,000 were committed. Meanwhile, an enemy force of regimental strength attempted to envelop the west flank of the Division. Heavy fighting continued throughout the afternoon, but by 2045 the situation was reported under control without loss of ground. Elements of the 8th ROK Division, southwest of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division, were engaged with an estimated enemy battalion during the night of 10-11 January. An enemy build-up in the Chechon area is becoming apparent as numerous groups of company size and larger have been observed to the north and northeast of the town Elements of the 7th U.S. Infantry Division engaged several of these groups, the largest esti- mated at 1,000, in a 6 hour fight. Elsewhere along the U.S. Eighth Army front, activity was limited to minor patrol clashes. Task Force 77 air operations were cancelled and PRASAE unbeaching operations were de- layed due to bad weather. THESEUS planes flew 34 sorties, and U.N. air- craft under FEAF control flew 269 sorties. (FECOM) (SECRET) 2. Weather: The weather will be broken to overcast clouds with lower broken clouds, and snow and rain showers. Visibility was restricted by snow and rain, except in northwest Korea where visibility was good.
