From 0700/03 (EST) to 0700/06 (EST)

1. Situation in Brief:
The present strength of Chinese Communist Forces on the immediate
Eighth Army Front is 3 units of division size or approximately 27,000 troops.
Enemy action, along the Chongchon River line during the night, was largely
confined to probing attacks in an effort to locate weak spots in Eighth Army
positions. At daylight on 6 November, hostile forces launched 2 attacks
against the 24th U.S. Infantry Division, some 7 miles northeast of Anju. One
attack gained about 1,200 yards before being contained. The enemy drive
toward the Anju bridgehead caused the withdrawal of the 27th British Common-
wealth Infantry Brigade from Pakchon to the Maengjung area. In the ROK II
Corps sector, the 5th ROK Regiment captured 2 key terrain positions in a see-
saw battle 3 miles northeast of Kunu, while the 3d ROK Regiment repulsed a
sharp attack in the same general area. Elements of the 2d U.S. Infantry
Division halted a company size attack which had penetrated the ROK positions
in the Sinnim area. The 1st ROK Cavalry Regiment continued its assault on
Kilchu, while the 1st ROK Regiment by-passed the stubbornly=defended city
and advanced north to Hwanggok. Inland, strong patrols of the 7th U.S. Infantry
Division ranged 10 miles north of Pungsan to the Ungi River against negligible
opposition. Naval close support aircraft supported ground action at Pungsan
and Kilchu. Minesweeping operations continued at Chinnampo and Wonsan,
Unloading and minesweeping were hindered by high surf. Mariner and
Neptune patrols continued. Naval air flew 329 sorties on the 3d, 4th, and 5th
of November, and U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 1,334 sorties,
including 698 combat. (FECOM) (SECRET)
