1. Situation in Brief:
a. On 13 January, it was reported that after a period of compara-
tive lull, fighting increased in intensity in the Wonju area, shortly after
1200/12 (KT). At that time, following air strikes and a heavy artillery
preparation, the 23d U.S. RCT launched an attack to take a hill 3 miles
southwest of Wonju. The estimated 1 to 2 enemy regiments holding the
hill, were driven northwest, after suffering heavy casualties. Other units
of the Division fought a 3-hour battle with an enemy battalion 3 miles
south of Wonju. Hostile forces of undetermined strength launched 2 un-
successful counterattacks early on 13 January. One "Banzai" charge was
repulsed, and another attack launched in the 38th U.S. RCT sector at 0700,
was beaten off prior to noon. The 7th U.S. Infantry Division reported sev-
eral encounters east and southeast of Chechon on 12 January. One of these
engagements which occurred 8 miles north of Tanyang had lasted for 6
hours when contact was broken at darkness. Another 6 hour fight took
place 11 miles east of Chechon during the night of 12/13 January. Approxi-
mately 15 miles northeast of Chechon, a hostile force consisting of 3 hos-
tile battalions drove elements of the 7th ROK Division from the town of
Macha. There was no report of contact on the west flank by the U.S. I
or IX Corps units nor on the east flank by the ROK I Corps. Guerrilla
activity continued in the Taejon area, as 2 friendly trains were attacked
prior to 2400/12 (KT), destroying 8 cars of ammunition on 1 train. On 12
January, U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 750 sorties. (FECOM)

b. On 14 January, it was reported that the focal point of enemy
activity shifted from the Wonju area to Yongwol near the U.S. X Corps and
ROK Army Boundary where a North Korean Regiment drove a ROK Security
Battalion from the town early on 13 January. Another enemy regiment was
later observed moving south from Macha toward Yongwol. Elements of
the 7th U.S. Infantry Division, enroute to Yongwol engaged a reinforced
enemy company occupying defense positions 2 miles north of the town, but
failed to dislodge it. The friendly unit then withdrew and artillery fire was
placed on the enemy positions with unreported results. Enemy action in
the Wonju area early on 13 January was characterized by an unusually
heavy volume of enemy mortar fire. Two enemy battalions which attacked
the French Battalion and elements of the 38th U.S. RCT, 2 miles south of
the town, withdrew north at 0900/13 (KT). The French unit reported that
