1. Situation in Brief:
The heaviest fighting occurred on the east coast, as strong enemy
forces, supported by armor, launched a series of coordinated attacks, be-
ginning at noon, against the ROK Capitol Division along the Myonggan
River. The enemy scored initial successes, causing withdrawal of both
friendly flanks, and penetrating the center positions in 3 places. With the
assistance of Naval air strikes, the ROK troops contained the attacks and
eliminated the penetrations by midnight. Inland, the 7th U.S. Infantry
Division made slow progress against light to heavy opposition in the moun-
tainous country north of the Ungi River in temperatures ranging. 22 de-
gress below zero F. In the ROK II Corps zone, enemy counterattacks
caused a local withdrawal of approximately 2 miles before being contained.
Elements of the 6th ROK Division launched an attack north in the Sochang
area, encountering light to heavy resistance. Action on the immediate U.S.
I Corps front was limited to patrol skirmishes. Elements of the 1st ROK
Division and the 27th British Commonwealth Infantry Brigade attacked
north at 0900/16 (KT) to establish positions on the left flank of the 24th
U.S. Infantry Division sector. Carrier planes from TF 77 launched strikes
against targets in northeast and northwest Korea, while TG 96.8 hit targets
in the Myongchon area. Naval air flew 183 sorties on 15 November, and
U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 509 sorties, including 260 combat
(FECOM)(SECRET)
2. Weather:
Overcast low clouds over northwest sector and mountain areas,
with low scattered clouds over the remainder of Korea. Visibility in the
northwest sector restricted in scattered snow showers. Forecast: A cold
front, having northeast-southwest orientation, is moving south from Man-
churia to Tushima Straits by 2100/17 (KT). There will be rapid clearing
after the passage of the front. (FEAF) (SECRET)
3. Chinese Communist Participation:
A total of 98 Chinese prisoners have been taken to date. However,
34 were unable to identify their parent organization, other than that it was
