1. Situation in Brief:
Assault elements registered gains up to 3 miles near the west
coast, while the enemy showed little disposition to contact the advancing
U.S. I Corps in strength. However, firmer opposition was offered in the
ROK II Corps zone, particularly the Wolbong Mountain area, where hos-
tile strength was reported being built up. After being driven from a hill
northwest of Wawon, on 16 November, the enemy launched a strong
counterattack during the evening and recaptured the position. In other
portions of the ROK II Corps zone, resistance which had been relatively
light during the early morning of 16 November, increased sharply as the
friendly attack progressed to the north and east. In the northeast, the
ROK Capitol Division held to its gains in a general area 10 miles southwest
of Chuchonhujang; meanwhile, maneuvering in an effort to outflank the hos-
tile forces which barred a further advance. Inland, elements of the 17th
U.S. Infantry RCT registered gains up to 5 miles against decreasing resis-
tance in an area northwest of Pungsan, while elements of the 31st U.S.
Infantry RCT3 operating to the east of the Pujon Reservoir, gained up to
10 miles. TF 77 aircraft struck troop concentrations, barracks, and a
Sinuiju bridge with good results. On 16 November, Naval air flew 249
sorties, and U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 569 sorties, including

2. Weather:
Scattered to broken low clouds over south Korea with broken to
overcast low, middle, and high clouds over north and central Korea. Visi-
bility good, lowering 3 to 5 miles in haze and light rain in early morning.
Forecast: Cold front over north Korean border to lie over Sea of Japan
and in Tsushima Straits by 2100/18 (KT). Frontal and prefrontal weather
to be broken to overcast low, middle, and high clouds with visibility 8 miles,
lowering to 2 to 4 miles in snow showers in north Korea and intermittent
