1. Situation in Brief:
Penetrations by large Chinese Communist Forces in the center
of the U.N. line, which now pose a formidable threat to the U.S. X Corps
as well as the U.S. Eighth Army, has caused the Eighth Army to initiate
a further withdrawal of U.S. I and IX Corps units to a general line of No-
gangjin-Hokusho-Unhung-Chusong=Bench Mark 880-Yongmun-Chang-
Taeul, The withdrawal is progressing satisfactorily. The 24th U.S. In-
fantry Division reported little contact, and the 1st ROK Division executed
a delaying action with the enemy maintaining continuous contact until mid-
night, at which time enemy contact was broken. The 25th and 2d U.S. In-
fantry Divisions withdrew under pressure. The Turkish Brigade, attacking
the right flank of the enemy's penetration, was encircled near Wawon, and
at last report 2 companies and 400 wounded in action were unable to break
out The 5th U.S. Cavalry Regiment® moving south toward Sunchon, was
engaged in a sharp encounter with a hostile regiment in Samsog inflicting
approximately 600 enemy casualties, but suffering 120 casualties. The
U.S. X Corps units continued under strong enemy attack, especially in the
Changjin Reservoir area. The 1st U.S. Marine Regiment has been heavily
engaged in Changjin with 750 CCF dead counted. The 5th U.S. Marine
Regiment beat off repeated attacks at Yudam, The Division's MSR has
been cut in several places as far south as Koto® Elements of the 7th U.S.
Infantry Division have been under continuous attack on the east side of
the Reservoir, and are now isolated. Enemy attacks have halted a relief
column The 1st Battalion of the 7th U.S. RCT is completely surrounded
in Sachang and the relief column is under enemy attack. North of Chongjin
the 18th ROK Regiment was opposed by 2 enemy battalions, supported by
artillery, while the 1st ROK Cavalry Regiment encountered an estimated
700 enemy troops supported by mortar fire, Carrier aircraft from Task
Force 77 attacked bridges, troops, supplies and military installations in
the Yalu River area with excellent results. Carrier Task Group 96,8 air
craft effectively supported Capitol ROK Division, and ST. PAUL screened
by SPERRY furnished fire support. Naval aircraft flew 182 sorties during
28 November, and U.N. aircraft under FEAF control flew 599 sorties, in-
cluding 267 combat. FEAF Bomber Command flew 21 sorties, dropping
incendiary bombs on enemy-held cities and attacking enemy communications
